Migrating a website to a new domain and its associated Google index error

We currently have the site "somedomain.net/codefest". We do not own this server (or this domain name).

Due to bandwidth issues, we are moving to a new server. Since we do not have an old domain name, we also move on to the new domain name.

Since we will soon have to abandon the old server, we will redirect all requests to "somedomain.net/codefest/anything" to "newdomain.net/anything".

My problem is that after many efforts, our page rank is quite significant. I am sure that the transfer of our website to a new domain name will be very detrimental to the ranking of the search engine of our site.

Is there any way to let search bots know that we have moved the website? Perhaps when I redirect from the old site, if I give a 302 redirect, search spiders will notice it?

Is there any other problem with moving our website that I should be aware of?

Thanks
JRH

Google recommends a 301 redirect. (301 indicates a permanent change. 302 indicates a temporary change.)

They have other advice on their "Moving Your Site" page , which should be more widely applicable than just Google.
