take a look at Doug Lee’s books ... they are quite old (unless he released a new one, not sure), but the parallel package added in 1.5 is based on his thread libraries. as far as I'm concerned, he is an authority on concurrent programming in java ... his books will provide you with the basics of what you need to understand in order to complete this task.
