Engines on the client and server side?

I am looking for parameters for the Java rule engine that will allow me to use the same rules on the server side, the GWT interface, and JavaME applications. I would also like to hear about the pitfalls of trying to do this.

Motivation is the impetus for using the rule engine in the database base on the server side, which, it seems to me, can cause a split between validation and business logic that replicates between clients and the server. We need to support really slow links and intermittent communications, so always calling the back to enforce the rules is not the preferred option.
