What is the best practice / solution for supporting font sizes with different screen resolutions.

You cannot do this without access to client system information, DPI, and resolution. The best thing you can do in CSS is probably to use a block emwhen working with font sizes, as this relates to the user's default font size.

font-size: 0.8em;

Font means 80% of the default font.
