Why do thousands of failed SQL Server login attempts cause an application to abort?

Last night, we had 45,000 unsuccessful attempts to access the SQK Server database on a high-profile site, which seems to correlate with part of the application stopping last night. However, when we clicked on the main 3 DLLs this morning, the issue was immediately fixed.

Why do unsuccessful attempts to enter the database cause a problem that will be so easily fixed by reloading the DLL, and what can be done to prevent this problem?
