In CoreAudio, what are the pros and cons of kAudioDevicePropertyBufferFrameSize setup?

When recording from a microphone in CoreAudio, what is it kAudioDevicePropertyBufferFrameSizefor? docs say that "A UInt32 whose value indicates the number of frames in the IO buffers". However, this does not provide any indication as to why you would like to install it.

The property kAudioDevicePropertyBufferFrameSizeRangegives you a valid minimum and maximum for the size of the buffer frame. Does the frame buffer size set the maximum deceleration rate? When do you want to install it differently than the default?
