SQL Server 2008 Replication and Synchronization - Practical Limitations

We consider placing our client data in our own system and using the MS Sync Framework to replicate data with an instance of SQL Server on each client site. Each client can have an average of about 500 MB of data, and there can be up to 1000 client sites, since we will have about 500 GB of data in total. Data changes must be replicated in both directions.

Has anyone tried to distribute a system with so many clients? Is there a practical limit?
