Definition of coarse / fine architecture

Speaking about the API, the terms “coarse-grained” or “fine-grained” are used a lot. What does this mean / are there any examples?

I saw the difference used a lot with SOA, for example:

In general, coarse-grained systems will have fewer method calls than a fine-grained system. Obviously, the coarse-grained methods will be smaller and will work more than the broken fine-grained versions.

Rough border interfaces are generally better if calls are expensive, for example, in a distributed system.
