Are MS Reporting Services reports available for offline reporting?

I work at ISV. Our product can use both SQL Server and Oracle as its internal server. It includes a number of reports (currently in Crystal).

We are exploring the switch to Micrsoft Reporting Services, but I'm starting to think it's a bad idea.

We want our reports to look like they are part of our application, and we don’t need SQL Server (the client can choose Oracle).

Although I see Reporting Services support offline mode (RDLC), the boundaries between what the SQL server requires and what doesn't look extremely ambiguous. (for example, the standalone report builder seems to require SQL Server, most of the documentation seems to be part of the SQL Server documentation)

It seems to me that if I want to keep my DB-agnostic application, I better avoid Reporting Services. Did I miss a boat here?

Thanks for the help in this guys. I have finished the conclusion "no" - at least not in our case. After examining the problem, here is what I found:

(btw: we want end users to be able to design reports and then connect them to our product)

  • There are at least 4 report designers (Business Intelligence Analyzer, Visual Studio Embedded Designer, Report Builder 2.0, Report Builder 3.0 (in CTP).

If you just use the ReportViewer control in "local processing mode", you can consider SQL Reporting Services a similar but separate product: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms251671.aspx If you haven’t already done, I would look in the "ReportViewer control" section, and not "SQL Server Reporting Services."

Your customers only need SQL Server if they want to host the report server separately from your product.
