PDF to black & white conversion tool

Is there a freely accessible (preferably open source) tool or library for converting PDF to black and white?

Some customers want to print created PDFs in B&W to save toner. Unfortunately, I cannot generate PDF in B&W directly, since we combine two PDF pages together, one of the official ones is not available in B&W.

Update: To be more specific, I am looking for an automatic solution, that is, a tool that can be called from a program.

With PrimoPDF ( http://www.primopdf.com/index.aspx ) you can install to create a black and white pdf.

"Print Settings" โ†’ "Paper / Quality", then you can choose between "Black and White" and "Color".

Seeing that William insists on the desire for Black and White, not Grayscale, I also propose this solution for converting PDF files to shades of gray. Because I think that this will fully fulfill the requirement to โ€œpreserve color tonerโ€ and use only black toner.

Use Ghostscript (latest version is 9.05) with this command:

 gs \
   -o black+white.pdf \
   -sDEVICE=pdfwrite \
   -dPDFSETTINGS=/prepress \
   -sColorConversionStrategy=Gray \
   -sColorConversionStrategyForImages=Gray \
   -sProcessColorModel=DeviceGray \
   -dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 \
    /path/to/input.pdf

Windows gswin32c.exe gswin64c.exe gs. Ghostscript :

.

Update

, " , LeaveColorUnchanged", ...

  • Ghostscript, , 9.x
  • PDF, , ICC

-dOverrideICC , .
