Seeing that William insists on the desire for Black and White, not Grayscale, I also propose this solution for converting PDF files to shades of gray. Because I think that this will fully fulfill the requirement to โpreserve color tonerโ and use only black toner.
Use Ghostscript (latest version is 9.05) with this command:
