How to prevent jerk in a chat application - vb.net

in my chat application (especially in IE) there is a twitching of the text, since I have a timer set to update the content within one second, how to prevent this.

if you use ajax and not "replace" the content in a div, "add" to it

eg. with jQuery, not

$('#convo').html('<p>Msg1</p><p>Msg2</p><p>Msg3</p>');

do

$('#convo').append('<p>Msg1</p>');
$('#convo').append('<p>Msg2</p>');
$('#convo').append('<p>Msg3</p>');
