Get Cell RSSI (Network Signal Strength) on Android 1.5

Is there a way to get the current cellular signal strength (RSSI) on Android 1.5?

I know there is a way to listen for signal strength updates through TelephonyManager, but this seems to give only a “state”, not a numerical value.

Is using an RSSI field in a neighboring cell accurate enough? I guess not, but I'm running out of ideas.

TelephonyManager.listen with the flag LISTEN_SIGNAL_STRENGTHS

Here is a tutorial that uses PhoneStatuslistener. Is the tutorial an example, it helps me with programming.
