Is there a need to use WS2_32.dll instead of wsock32.dll when creating using MSVC9.0

I am in the middle of porting some code that needs to be compiled with MSVC 9.0, and one of my colleagues mentioned that we would need to reference WS2_32.dll because only Winsock 2 is now supported. Is there any truth to this? Our code is quite old and highly dependent on wsock32.dll, so this requirement can be a huge obstacle to the project.
