When is it appropriate to use accordions?

Accordions can provide spectacular effects, but in terms of usability, when are they appropriate? For example, in a menu tree with many options, an accordion can provide a better overview of categories. On the other hand, if I want to see all the available options, I need to click a lot.

When do you use accordions?

Thank!

Consider a google map with an overlay panel that allows you to choose from certain criteria to display points on the map.

In our large content management app, accordions have proven to be a very effective organizational tool. What is nice about them is that you can quickly jump to what you are looking for without scrolling to see what is available. However, I do not think they should be used if you do not have a large number of controls.
