How to insert a hash character in TextMate for Mac on a British keyboard?

When using TextMate on a Mac for HTML (and even any other language), I cannot enter a hash character ( #) using the keyboard. English keyboards have a character £on the key 3that replaces the hash character.

In several other Mac applications, you can press alt+ 3to get a hash character, but this does not work in TextMate.

Is there an alternative that more experienced Mac programmers than I know?

- Shift + 3 vs Option + 3 (£ # get toggled - get £ Option + 3).

→ → → U.S. ( " " ).
