Questions for iPhone Developers

I was asked by many of my relatives and friends if I can develop applications on iPhone or iPod touch. The answer I always gave was "sure if I could get everything I need." I have discussed this with many friends, and we believe that if we can win cheap games and get a million people to buy them for a dollar, and do it every month or so, we could make some money. Not enough to retire, but enough to make it worthwhile.

So my question is pretty vague and leaves a lot of room for a lot of answers:

What is needed for development on the iPhone?

I got the impression that you need a Mac and need MacOS. Can't you get away with partitioning your hard drive and installing MacOS? Or start a virtual machine and install MacOS? I am primarily a windows developer with extensive Linux experience.

What do I need to buy for iPhone development? What do I need to download? Can you name a few books? Where to begin? I urge you to share your impressions, obstacles that you must overcome, what seems difficult to you, what was easy, what was easy?
