How to parse an image for boundary vertices? Geometry of a complex object (long-range physics)

How can I create the vertices of a body by scanning an image and detecting its shape (from it opaque pixels)?

I want to create complex geometry, and in fact I have no real idea where to start, so any advice would be highly appreciated. The accepted answer is likely to be what explains the highest idea.

FarseerPhysics has the functionality to convert textures to polygons (scroll down to Texture to Polygon), suitable for creating bodies.
