As an experiment, I want to work a bit with AWS. How much can I pay?

Question

I'm going to go to Pycon, and while I have my Webfaction hosting, one of the tutorials (JKM) asks students to have AWS instances. I was trying to figure out what some examples of the minimum charge might look like? I will have a lamp server with Django and the required amount of memory, but there is no traffic next to it.

Anyone have any recommendations / tips? My Google searches and browsing here did not display a lot of useful information.
