How to create these black and white icons used in the status bar?

I believe this has something to do with the alpha channel of the image, but I need to figure out how to do this in Photoshop or gimp.

Tell the NSImage instance for the icon that it should be a template image. The status element should then make the correct path automatically.

My original answer follows. It describes how to make an effect manually. On Leopard and later you do not need to do anything - just say that the image will be the image of the template, and it should just work.
