What concept does .net use to create mobile software?

I know that in java we use j2me to develop mobile software. What is equivalent in .NET? What would be the best way to find out? Can I also get recommendations for beginners?

The foundation of the .NET Compact is what you are looking for. Wiki Page / MS Page

There are several basic .NET development mobile concepts described on this page .

This, of course, assumes that you want to develop for Windows Mobile phones. There are other ways to develop software such as the iPhone — you'll need to take a peek at Mono and MonoTouch .

There’s a great video to check out here if you are interested (Chris Hardy - C # on iPhone with MonoTouch)

Be a little careful: the answer to this question is likely to change significantly, as Silverlight seems to be a new platform for third-party mobile applications on Windows devices. Although this is very late and it is not entirely clear what is happening, I doubt that now is the right time to start exploring the Compact Framework.
