Comet vs Ajax for communication

My site needs a chat room, and I also want to implement facebookesque for personal communication.

Which is the most economical / effective (purely from the point of view of bw and server) for me. Regular 1-second polling ajax chat or cometary solution.

Comet usually results in lower bandwidth usage (assuming an average of less than 1 chat per second per chat on average) due to the fact that it will only request the server once per sent message. This usually results in more concurrent active connections to your server.
