Unassigned characters in the ascii spectrum?

Are there any unassigned, invisible characters in the ascii spectrum that I could safely use as newline markers? The idea is to build a Java word processor to edit Markdown in wysiwyg mode (like SO), but in a frame showing a collapsible markdown (as opposed to SO).

Each character in ASCII (0x00 - 0x7F) ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASCII ) is assigned the correct value. But why don't you just use \n(0x0a) as a new line?
