How to identify a change in development strategy from middle management?

We start with several (14) customers using our products. These products were developed as part of a closed source web development program supported by only one core developer .

Basically, a framework server is required to be able to run any application built into it. Thus, in our application layer there is no code. Think of it as a CMS that allows us to develop in our own language the frame server itself.

This framework is built in Java and is closed source. It has a layer of plugins that need to use the proprietary IDE to create them.

  • At the moment, the company has only 3 developers who can code the framework itself, and 2 who can code the IDE to create plugins. We are the only company that pays the salary of 2 out of 3 developers, the 3rd owner.
  • At the moment, we do not know if there is documentation for the frame level.
  • We know that there is no documentation for the plugin.

The only reason we are developing within this framework is that we have already invested in it, and the change will cost us.
