Are input limits directory or disk?

Are the inodes for Linux a subdirectory or the entire file system? I am using ububtu 9.10 64 bit server.

Is it possible to resolve the inode limit by splitting files into several subdirectories, if this is a directory limitation?

Inodes is a * nix representation of disk files. They are identified by number, not by the path where they are in the directory structure. Thus, the restriction applies to the entire file system, regardless of which hard link (file entry that you see in the directory) points to an index.
