How does Microsoft make money from silver? How does Adobe make money from Flash? WITH#

I'm just wondering how companies make money by offering free RIA application development platforms. They invested a lot of money and human resources to create and improve these platforms. Of course, no commercial company does it for free, there will be some kind of strategy. But how does Microsoft make money out of silver? How does Adobe make money from Flash? Is it offering application development tools? or is it by licensing any software technology? or something different?

Microsoft sells quite a few copies of Visual Studio, and Adobe sells quite a few copies of CS4.

In addition, Silverlight helps developers in the Microsoft ecosystem and, therefore, helps them earn more money on products such as Windows, Office and Sql Server. Similar synergies exist for Adobe with Flash and Reader for Acrobat, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and ColdFusion.
