EnableEventValidation and validateRequest difference

What is the difference between enableEventValidation and validateRequest? Although the former works on the callback / callback invoked by the control (only on the server side, I assume?), The latter for every request caused by the return of the control anyway? Or will validateRequest be clicked on the standard html link by clicking?
