Cannot debug Android: This device does not start. (Code 10)

I have a new Nexus One. I am trying to follow the directions for installing the USB driver . When I connect the device, it does not start the new hardware wizard, as the documentation suggests. I can run hdwwiz.exe to start it and manually install the driver, but when I do this, the device manager says: "This device cannot start (code 10)"

What am I doing wrong here?

Duh. I forgot to enable "USB Debugging" in the settings → Applications → Development. As soon as I did this, the New Equipment Wizard appeared, and the installation went smoothly.

If you are on Windows, you also need to install drivers. If you, for example, have HTC, then these drivers are included in the HTC sync software.
