Replace SQL Server Database

The supplier has a database (read-only), which is sent to us every week via dvd. Their updated script detaches an existing copy of the database, overwrites MDF and LDF, drops all users and recreates what they think should be proper security. Is there a way that I can simply synchronize data without shutting down the database? This is a 24/7 tool that causes 15 minutes of downtime during updates.

Supporting Information: The database has ~ 50 tables with a total size of 400 MB. The actual amount of data changed is around 400 KB. The server runs server 2008 with SQL Server Enterprise Edition 2008.

Reading Red Gate Data Data

This will lead to script differences for you that you can apply to your existing database.

It also allows you to automatically sync your data.

You will need to upload the incoming database to the server for this operation.

Something you can do is to have two databases, DB_A and DB_B, when they send you the new database that you are installing and replace DB_B. In the meantime, all your users are using DB_A. Then rename DB_A to DB_C and rename DB_B to DB_A. This will reduce downtime to almost zero. Or you can simply change the connection to the point from DB_A to DB_B as soon as the DB is ready.
