Git-svn operation philosophy?

How does git-svn work?

I have access to the svn repository at work, but I'm going to start working with a distributed team, and I would like to start using git in this project (as a pilot).

Since svn does not support the same range and fork / merge style as git does, you will be limited in how much you can do with the upstream repository. However, locally, this is the usual normal git repository, so you can fork and merge, as well as choose cherries and forwarders, as well as anything your heart desires.
