SAML - how to process a request?

I am new to SAML. My question is simple:

At SAML's request, what do IdPs usually do?

I assume they parsed the XML first - and then? Can anyone describe the steps? I mean the general steps that every IdP should take at least.

See the SAML 2.0 Auth request and response example and a list of steps. The easiest way is the "POST Request IdP POST Request", so start with this. This is not the only option for deploying SAML 2.0, others are also described there. Hope this helps.
