We have an SSAS server with a cube deployed to the server through the WAN. We are trying to connect to a cube from Excel on different client workstations. The server is not in a domain with clients. This "works" for some of us, but not for others. We are trying and cannot yet determine what the difference is on machines that work against those that do not. However, even for those who work, it is not as easy as we think it should be. I will explain:
In Excel, we use the Data-Other Sources-Analysis Server parameter, which provides us with a standard dialog: the
standard dialog http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/de3420ec26.gif
Now we believe that the firewall and server settings are correct, because we are presented with a dialog box that allows us to choose which cube to use from the server:

And clicking “Finish” allows Excep to work with the cube, as evidenced by the standard Excel dialog:
everything seems OK. Http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/fdf4626609.gif
But then we get a terrible transport-level error message: transport-level
error http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/243d5f3d49.gif
Please note that this error appears even on machines that "work". What makes them “work” is that after clicking “OK” the following dialog box appears in this dialog box: the
mysterious new dialog http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/b8fc6bae18.gif
As soon as this dialog box appears, you re-enter the password, and after that everything "just works." Although I would like to “just work” without this second dialogue, at least it works ... But on many machines that we tested, this new dialogue never appears. Instead, they simply receive the following error message, leaving them out of luck: the
final error is http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/601b9294e3.jpg
