Mail Server Integration in Java EE Application

I am creating a web application that should be able to do the following:

  • Send emails to (external) addresses registered by users (e.g. Gmail, Yahoo Mail, etc.).
  • Send / receive emails to local mailboxes that are in the application. These are more “messages” in this sense.

What are the potential open source technologies that I could integrate with here? Thanks for your submissions.
