Visual Studio Alt-Copy in Eclipse

Visual Studio has the ability to copy arbitrary blocks of text (not through lines) by holding down the alt key ... Is there something similar in Eclipse?

Yep - find the command "Switch Block" ( Alt+ Shift+ A). This switches the editor between column mode and line mode.

You can make rectangular selections and even print on multiple lines at once. Very comfortably.

For Eclipse 3.5 M5 and higher, the block selection mode can be switched using the toolbar icon highlighted below.
