Strange characters in GVim visual mode

When I enter visual mode (from normal mode), and then when pressed :, the following characters appear: <,'>after:

Is this a function or an error?

You have selected a visual range, and when you enter :, while it is, the selected range specifier is '<,'>automatically added to indicate that the command will be applied only to the selection.
