Can someone explain ja_JP.UTF8?

I know utf8, but what's the difference between * .utf8?

Before Unicode, non-English characters were handled using tricks such as Code Pages (like this ) and special character sets (like Shift_JIS ). UTF-8 contains a much wider range of characters with a completely different display system (i.e. how each character is addressed by a number).
