Why should I use XFN in my HTML?

What is the advantage of using XFN (XHTML Friends Network) ? I have seen this on several blogs and social networking sites, but I really don't understand why this is useful. Besides being able to style these elements with CSS3 and select them using JavaScript, what's the use? Are you aware of any sites that actually use XFN to enhance user experience? Also, are there similar XFN alternatives?
