Why do we use the identifier column in the table if we have a unique value

Question

I want to ask a little question here, but I really do not know what the answer to this question is.

I have an account table that has

Username | Password

username is the primary key, therefore its unique

so do i need to put the id column in the table? if so, what is the use of this?
