How do you simulate running out of memory in MySQL?

I want to know how my system behaves under high load. To do this, I would like to artificially reduce the amount of memory available for MySQL. How can I do it?

One possible solution would be to run the application and MySQL in a virtualized environment. Usually you can control the RAM and the number of processors to see how it will work.
