Google gears discontinued, html 5 in draft

we are trying to develop a mobile web application that will provide offline capabilities, not just reading, but also creating content.

Gears supports three important aspects: - the local server, so we can have cached static content such as html, css, js, etc. - a local database so that we can store data stored locally for offline access, as well as store new content in it during offline work - workerpool, used for a background process that synchronizes data with the server

Looking at the gear page and some other articles, gears refuse in favor of html 5, which is understandable.

However, at this stage two problems arise:

  • there is still a long way to support HTML 5 supported by major desktop browsers, not to mention mobile devices
  • HTML 5 does not support workers, there is a project http://dev.w3.org/html5/workers/ , but I assume that real browser support is still far away.

Do what he does today? (e.g. next year) cheers Rok

I think that you misinterpreted Googleโ€™s position on Gears. According to an article in the LA Times :

Google , : " Gears, , . , HTML5 , , ".

I was surprised at the level of HTML5 already in (desktop) browsers (with the exception of IE, of course). Mobile is several years behind. I found this site useful: http://caniuse.com/
