Search if a domain name is already registered?

Hi, Is there any API for searching if this domain name is already registered by someone and gets an alternative (automatically offered available domain names)?

EDIT: - I think I need the right area, not a search :)

thanks for your support. I found a domaintools.com service called whoisapi . You can request available domain names and other information by sending an xml request to your servers.

I wrote whois for PHP, Perl, VB, and C # using the trick that it asks for '{domain}.whois-servers.net'.
