Any application that, in your opinion, costs more than free but is afraid, can lead to fewer downloads if it is not paid, at least has an easy way to donate. People often overlook this fact, and yet many people whom I know if they receive an application that solves the problem will donate 5 or so dollars. It may not seem very similar, but in fact it is money for nothing, because there is no reason NOT to implement it.
Another option is to see if you can download a similar application with yours. If this is done professionally, with the ability for the user not to install the second application, this can be a good source of income without unpleasant advertisements for the user that you can deal with.
