How do you control the light of the Apple MacBook "Sleep"?

I would like to control the sleep light on a MacBook or iMac.

That is, I want it to turn on, off and pulsate.

I am happy to do this in usermode or kernel mode. I guess I will need root.

Any ideas?

No, you, at least, have nothing to do with the possibility that you will kill your car. Sleeping light is controlled by SMC, and you cannot reach it through Open Firmware.
