Creating a document format in MS Office format to display document properties

Our documents applications are single binary files.

Our customers asked if we could add document properties like Office Office to our document files to make it easier for users to manage them. Easier to manage, I mean the ability of Windows Explorer to display general document properties in tooltips.

My research suggests that we should consider OLE Structured Storage as the foundation for our data files. I saw this technique, alternatively described as MS Structured Storage, OLE 2 Compound Document Formats, and Windows file metadata.

My concern about using OLE Structured Storage is that it does not seem like Office 2007 or 2010 uses this file format anymore, and OLE Structured Storage requires registering the DSOFILE.DLL ActiveX component, which many of our clients will not be able to use. because they run our software on locked workstations, where users do not have administrator rights to install the software. (Our application software is a pure XCOPY deployment).

Listen to ideas about what our options are.

Thanks Malcolm
