Retyping password to confirm ... necessary or excessive?

A simple question ... I noticed that several large sites (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) rejected the idea of requiring new registration owners to confirm their new password by typing it again.

Balancing usability and preventing errors ... is it better to require confirmation or not?

I would say yes, this is a useful feature.

I repeatedly misled the new password, and I am glad that the software caught it, and not later, because later resetting or changing the password is usually a cumbersome process (it was wrong to just notify me) .
