SMTP service for sending email in my web application

Question

I use the gmail SMTP server to send emails (notifications, password reminders, etc.) in my web application. However, I get to the point where I reach a limit of 500 emails sent per day using gmail SMTP.

Is there any SMTP service I can use instead? A friend told me about sendgrid.com, but this is the only one I heard about.

In addition to the SendGrid that you mentioned, there are also Postmark for email transactions and Newsberry for email marketing.

I recently found http://www.mandrill.com , which seems to be MailChimp's transactional mail service. It allows you to send emails through SMTP and API. It also provides many other features such as delivery, open tracking, templates, etc. Its free for up to 12,000 letters per month.
