Is URL a shorter effect?

I hope this post will not be killed on the basis of "NOT PROGRAMMING RELATED."

Everyone seems to be flocking to the URL shortening service recently. For some special sites like twitter, I'm fine with him.

However, I am just wandering around, if I use this shortened URL elsewhere, such as PR, am I losing links juicy? or are there any other downsides that I need to bear using the shortened url?

The biggest question you ask yourself is if you rely on a shortened URL that you don't run yourself: who exactly do you rely on working links to your website?
