How to achieve greater transparency with GIF?

Is there any software, plugin, or technique that will allow you to create / export PNG-like GIFs with smooth transparent edges, at least for smaller images such as bullets or buttons.

I really need to use GIFs sometimes for IE6, so it would be great to know if such a tool exists?

No, GIF does not support alpha transparency as PNG does. You can choose only one of 256 possible colors in GIF to be transparent.

As far as I remember (I have not used GIF for some time), GIF does not have transparency of the variable - the pixel is either transparent or not. You can simulate transparency by mixing with a background image, but this will rely on the presence of a static, specific background.
