Aesthetically pleasing GUI components

I want to make GUI components aesthetically pleasing.

Is there any specific relationship I should use between the width and height of the component that would make it particularly attractive?

Google Chrome is very nice to watch. It seems that the latest trend is to use large soft buttons with cartoony icons. Also, controls, such as text boxes, etc., should be large with rounded corners, and there should not be so many.
