E-commerce development: contracting with a talented developer and expensive large company

I would like this post to go into the general list of pros and cons for concluding a contract to update a significant e-commerce site. (Say, 400-1200 hours of work depending on talent and organization).

What are the advantages and disadvantages of concluding a contract with a small talented and experienced company or an individual developer?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of contracting with a larger company for the same job? (More than 30 employees)

I could definitely use some help to clear this question, but I think the post can be a pretty good resource in stackoverflow. This is a question that needs to be answered again and again for small businesses.

Here are a few considerations that I have come up with so far:

                 Stability Reliability Cost Brain Drain
                 --------- ----------- ---- -----------
Large Company: High High High Risky
Small Company: Med Med Med Med
Individual: Risky Risky Low None
  • Stability . Will the company / person be in about a few months and years to support and expand the application?
  • Reliability . What is a product delivery record for an organization or an individual? This is probably the most difficult parameter to measure.
