Is there a generally accepted definition of (soft) real-time delays?

I am trying to find a benchmark for how long users are ready to wait for a response from a remote service. In my case, the answer is for a very useful, but not critical for business, verification of data entry. I assume that some work has been done in this place in the HCI space.

If you know the generally accepted definition for soft answers in real time, then great, but I also appreciate your reasonable thoughts.
